I shared a little bit about why it’s important for me to go on little photographic adventures here. The second purpose for doing this–taking a camera anywhere and exploring with it–is that it sharpens my skills. Blog design has become a huge part of my life these days (way more than I ever intended it to) and it’s become paramount that I keep my eyes and trigger finger in shape. Hah. Okay, well, you know what I mean. Anytime you use your artist’s tool (like a camera), it doesn’t matter if you’re getting paid or if you’re doing a  job or not, you’re becoming better at seeing and capturing. You’re learning what attracts your eye and what captures your heart, two things that distinguish you from other artists and photographers. This is always good, right? You’re finding yourself, if you will. While you’re becoming better at and more intentional about taking a picture, you’re also finding yourself as an editor and processor. You’ll more quickly find your own style and what you want your final images to look and feel like. Traveling abroad really helped me in this way (aside from Zach McNair’s gentle encouraging) — all I had was time to wander around little towns in Italy and Norway and because I wasn’t hired to photograph the images I was shooting, it was all on me, as an artist. My intentionality grew stronger. My style became more and more defined and pronounced. I encourage you to get out of your house and go shoot for yourself! If you want to take a peek at some other explorations, check out the VagabondBond.

Nothing in the world is more common than unsuccessful people with talent, leave the house before you find something worth staying in for. – Banksy

Here’s the rest of the images I shot when Adam and I went on a little Flagstaff adventure a couple weeks ago. I hope they encourage you to find yourself wandering with camera in-hand without much direction and with a lot of motivation and inspiration.

Even though I’m beyond grateful that Instagram was finally introduced to the Android world (I don’t have an iPhone. You’re shocked.), VSCO Film for iPhone gave me a twinge … no, more like a vicious, unrelenting pang … of jealousy. So, I started looking around for other Android camera apps. My main criteria: my camera app has to be easy to navigate, non-glitchy, pretty (as possible), and I have to be able to save my own settings for future use. I’d also prefer to be able to see a preview of the setting that I might apply before I apply it.

I’m getting a kick out of Pixlr-o-matic – image sample below, it’s the very first image I ever edited with the app, just to show you how easy it is to use. I  love how quickly it responds and how easily the settings are applied. They even have an online/computer version! Pixlr-o-matic also comes with little free kits you can download including light leaks, frames, and vintage film packs. I also really like Magic Hour because you can adjust curves (You can even bring up the darkest shadow points and bring down the brightest white points on the curve) and you can change the saturation, contrast, and exposure, and change the opacity of the vignette and texture you’re using. Plus, all the extra little filter goodies are free after you purchase the $1.99 app. Both apps allow you to save your own effects (my favorite part).

I have a feeling I’ll be having a lot of fun with these this summer! I apologize that my image quality isn’t that great because this picture was photographed with my front facing camera, which is subpar to say the least. Plus, it was incredibly bright being so much closer to the sun here in Northern Arizona, I couldn’t really even see what I was doing!

I just booked my ticket to visit home–my original home in Grants Pass, Oregon. Whenever I come home, it doesn’t matter how much time I’m there, I feel like I never quite get to do all the things I want to. I’m really looking forward to a handful of things:

  • A $0.25 Blue Fungus Fizz Phosphate from the Grants Pass Pharmacy. $0.25 back in the old days and still $0.25.
  • Perfecter than perfect Southern Oregon weather.
  • Gorgeous light to shoot people in and a stunning backdrop to complement.
  • Mountains. Trees. PCT.
  • Fresh Air. Fresh Water. Rivers. Lakes.
  • Swimming with friends.
  • Hellgate Jet Boat Excursion down the Rogue River.
  • Road trips: Crater Lake, Bend, Redwoods, Portlandia, Oregon Coast, etc.
  • Sitting on rooftops with best friends at sundown.
  • Britt Festival in historic downtown & old West Jacksonville, OR where I experienced the best concerts of my life: Brandi Carlile and The Swell Season
  • Outside church in the evenings.
  • Reading a book outside first thing every morning on our back porch. Before I moved to italy, I was reading
As The Romans Do, per suggestion by my italian teacher. It’s the perfect summer read. I think I’ll start this one next month.
  • Spending time downtown, I love our little town where a beautiful river runs through and there’s lots of thrifting to do and good food to eat!
  • First Friday Art Nights. Huge.
  • Staying in a tree-top hotel. Ask the Solars about that one!
  • Photographing weddings & people! Let’s face it, this blog is in desperate need of some consistent portrait posting.

These cats are drinking a Blue Fungus Fizz Phosphate. The blue fizz has fizzled at this point of the shoot. Corey liked his so much, he drank it all in one sip. You might recognize Darian, she’s been my amazing intern/assistant since the dawn on time.
